Everyone loves older bands, whether it's goth, emo, or whatever genre of music you may be into. People keep going back to those bands that are 10+ years old. And there's a reason for that.
Theres obviously something so different about modern music... but what exactly is wrong with it? The rise of fast-paced, modern social medias has obvoiusly impacted our attention spans. People want to consume content quickly and constantly. When viewing any sort of media online, people judge very quickly whether they will spend time on it or not.
Unfortunately, this has greatly affected the way music is created. Songs are seemingly crafted around catchphrases, with the rest of the song being thrown together without much thought. Artists want to create a single attention-getting clip within their songs that lasts just long enough to be used as a social media sound.
Because of where I work, I hear a lot of country music. Country seems to be one of the worst genres when it comes to this problem. I am not so familiar with how other modern music may compare. Lyrics are composed of mainly filler lyrics or recycled sayings/lines from other songs.
Along the same lines, music seems to have lost that art of story telling. People no longer release concept albums, but drop albums as quickly as possible, tryng to keep up with trends.
Is music dying? Has it lost its soul? It's pretty depressing to think about. My band is trying to bring back that soul, that story telling, that excitement to music, but it feels like we're one of the last. I will continue to update here as we work on our music more. If anyone knows modern bands that aren't selling out to quick-fame schemes, that preserve the essence of music... pls drop them in the chatbox! I'd love to find more to listen to. :D
